Biosynthetic Futures
EXHIBITION: A DISTANT FUTURE WITH SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY
Biohackerlab at stockholm makerspace, 2016
With the emergence of synthetic biology, the foundations of life itself could be subject to major changes. How will we use this new power? How will it affect us and our relationship to nature?
Synthetic biology combines engineering and the life sciences, with the goal of creating new biological functions that do not exist naturally. In this exhibition, by the Nonhuman Nonsense Collective in 2016, current scientific advances are extrapolated into extreme scenarios. These scenarios are not a prediction or a forecast of the future, but an imagination of a parallel world, a possible future.
From this future, speculative artifacts and organisms are designed, materialized and extracted to directly interact with the exhibition visitors, thereby immersing them in this alternate reality. The discussion of how we should react to this emerging technology is in the hands of the spectator.
This exhibition was made with support from the Interactive Institute.
